Scientists recently revealed the first image of a black hole: an object in space so dense and with so much gravitational pull that even light cannot escape. Oregon taxpayers have been able to see and witness the effects of our own black hole for some time. It’s called PERS, and it will not let any tax dollars escape. It has gobbled up an excessive and increasing amount of state funds and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
Our Legislature and governor recently diverted $108 million from the upcoming kicker, likely disappearing into that black, bottomless hole. Like most Oregonians, I am willing to pay more if it results in a better education for our children, but without change, much, if not all, of any increase in the state’s income will be consumed by PERS.
How our governor and Legislature can continue to beat the drum for increased educational funding and, at the same time, let this black hole persist in consuming any and all extra funding is criminal. As a registered Democrat, I think they should be jailed.
